Important Toy Safety Product Recalls

Christmas is once again upon us, the most popular time of year for new toy gifts. Unfortunately, not all toys sold in the marketplace are safe.

What should you do?

First, parents should understand that the toys they already own may not be safe.

In most cases, toys are found to be dangerous after many thousands of them are sold and are being used by children.  Only after significant use does it become apparent that the toys are, in fact, dangerous.  Unfortunately, this is often discovered through multiple injuries, and sometimes even death, caused by dangerous toys.  In many cases, there is a repeated malfunction of a certain aspect of the toy, which often causes similar injuries to many children.

Second, parents should visit the website of the U.S. Product Safety Commission periodically to determine whether any of the toys used by their children are unsafe. Consumer

This site is frequently updated when new information is known about the dangerousness of specific toys.  For instance, during this past month, the CPSC announced recalls for trampolines sold by Sports Authority (Sportspower Parkside model TR-14FT-COM), which were voluntarily recalled by that company, the toys Water Balz, Skulls, Orbs and Flower Toys imported by Dunecraft (which were voluntarily recalled by that firm), and high powered magnet sets by Reiss Innovations (which were voluntarily recalled by that firm).

Third, any products that fail in a manner that could have caused injury, and any products that resulted in injury (or instances in which potentially injuries were narrowly avoided)should be reported promptly to the CPSC. This is the best way in helping to identify products, especially toys, that are dangerous.

In many instances, when a product causes an injury, it is not clear whether the the product itself is inherently dangerous.  The person who sustained the injury will likely be unaware of others who may have been similarly injured from the product.  Because the CPSC keeps careful track of these injuries, it will usually see a pattern develop over time when injuries are reported for products that may be dangerous, and it can then take action.
